Auditions

All applicants interested in joining the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra must attend an audition. Audition requirements, schedule, and sheet music are available below.

General information

  • Audition date: Saturday, January 9, 2010, starting at 9:30am*
  • Location: Baldwin High School Band Room and Piano Room behind auditorium (map)*.
  • You will be notified of acceptance via email

*Check the Schedule and Location section for the specific time and place of auditions for your instrument.

Additional Information

  • Violinists have the option of auditioning for either first or second violin.
  • We are asking for scales and arpeggios. Details are listed below.
  • We are strongly recommending that you work with a metronome. Your teacher can help you with this. If you don't have a metronome, please get one that is loud enough for you to hear while you play. One recommendation is the Seiko Quartz SQ.   Dr. Beat is pricey but it subdivides beats and has a vocal feature which counts out loud if you desire. Though working with a metronome can be a challenge, it will help you to progress immensely. Since this is new this year, it is better to play slower with the correct rhythm than to play up to tempo and rhythmically inaccurate. Of course, if you are able to do both, that's great!
  • If you have any questions or need help learning the music, please ask your private teacher. If you don't have a teacher, you may contact any of the instructors listed on the back of the MYPO Registration Brochure or Contact Us page.

Mindset

If you want to be a part of MYPO, but the music seems too difficult, please do not be discouraged and give up without trying. Try! Seek help. We are here to help you to become the best musician that YOU would like to be.

Practice diligently because that is the only way to learn the music.

It takes discipline. This is a good opportunity to grow in this characteristic.

Take up the challenge! Why not? You will only gain more skill and knowledge on your instrument.

Do your best and that is enough!
